Modern Horizons 3 Commander: dure kaarten, zware synergie
Modern Horizons 3 Commander kwam op 14 juni 2024 uit, tegelijk met de grote Modern Horizons 3-set zelf. Waar de reguliere set los speelbaar is in Modern, mikken deze vier Commander-decks op de kast thuis: 100-kaart singleton, EDH-regels, en een portie nieuwe kaarten die nooit in boosters zaten. Onze catalogus telt 398 kaarten voor deze uitgave, gelijk aan de basisset zelf. Geen aparte foils of showcase-varianten die het aantal opblazen, gewoon de kern.
Wat deze set anders maakt
Modern Horizons-sets zijn al jaren het lab van Wizards. Geen verhaallijn om rekening mee te houden, geen blok-beperkingen, gewoon mechanics en kaarten die de constructed-formats moeten opschudden. Bij de Commander-tak van MH3 zie je dat terug in kaarten die direct bruikbaar zijn in cEDH-decks, maar ook in vrijwel elk casual 100-kaartendeck een plek verdienen. Reanimator-thema's, graveyard-synergie en efficiënte removal domineren de precons. De vier decks pakken elk een eigen invalshoek, van tribal-agressie tot waarde-engines die de hele game uitmelken.
Kaarten die de aandacht trekken
Barrowgoyf springt eruit als het soort kaart waar heel Modern Horizons om bekendstaat: goedkoop, efficiënt, en met een upside die op het randje van te sterk balanceert. Een Tarmogoyf-variant die zichzelf voedt via de graveyard, precies het type kaart dat spelers meteen in bestaande decks proppen buiten de precon om.
Talon Gates of Madara is de land-kant van het verhaal. Utility-lands met een unieke twist zijn de reden dat mensen los naar deze precons zoeken, ook als ze de rest van het deck nooit uitpakken. Een land dat meer doet dan tappen voor mana verkoopt zichzelf.
Akroma's Will is de klassieke Commander-bom: een instant die een boardwipe overleeft en tegelijk de aanval binnenhaalt. Precies het soort finisher waar precon-bouwers op leunen om een deck een winconditie te geven zonder dat je zelf hoeft te graven naar een combo.
Voor spelers in de doos
Wie een van deze precons koopt, speelt meteen mee zonder uren te bouwen. De decks zijn krachtiger uit de doos dan gemiddelde Commander-precons, want Wizards wist dat het publiek hier vooral bestond uit spelers die toch alles gingen aanpassen. Dat merk je aan de curve en aan de hoeveelheid stuks die direct bruikbaar zijn buiten het deck.
Voor verzamelaars
Verzamelaars kijken naar drie dingen: staat van de kaarten, of het om de precon-versie gaat of een losse pull uit boosters, en welke prints al zijn uitgeput. Kaarten als Barrowgoyf en Talon Gates of Madara komen ook voor in andere printings van MH3, dus check altijd welke versie je in handen hebt voordat je een prijs plakt. De precon-only kaarten zijn schaarser omdat mensen decks uit elkaar trekken voor losse targets, waardoor complete sealed precons zeldzamer worden dan de losse kaarten zelf.
Wat het nu waard is om te kopen
Ruim een jaar na release is de hype-fase voorbij en zit de markt in de fase waar het om echte vraag draait. Sealed precons zijn aantrekkelijk als je wilt spelen zonder zelf te bouwen, en de prijs ligt inmiddels stukken lager dan bij release. Losse chase-kaarten zoals Barrowgoyf blijven relevant zolang ze in actieve Modern- en Commander-decks zitten, dus daar zakt de bodem niet snel uit de markt. Voor pure investering is dit geen set om op te jagen: MH3 Commander was een productieoplage zonder kunstmatige schaarste, dus grote prijssprongen zitten er niet zomaar in. Koop hem om te spelen, niet om over vijf jaar rijk te worden.
