Modern Horizons 3 landde op 14 juni 2024 en Wizards trapte niet zachtjes af. 528 kaarten in de basisset, evenveel in onze catalogus, en meteen een set die het Modern-formaat grondig door elkaar schudde. Dat is precies waar Modern Horizons voor bestaat: geen Standard-legale filler, maar kaarten die direct het competitieve speelveld raken. MH3 deed dat harder dan de twee voorgangers.
Eldrazi terug van weggeweest
Het opvallendste verhaal van deze set: de Eldrazi-titanen. Emrakul, the World Anew, Ulamog, the Defiler en Kozilek, the Broken Reality zijn geen nostalgische knipoog, het zijn bruikbare bommen die kolossale casting cost-trucs en colorless-strategieën weer relevant maken. Ramp- en Eldrazi-decks kregen er in één klap nieuw gereedschap bij, en dat voelde je meteen op MTGO en in paper-toernooien. Dit zijn kaarten waar een deck zich omheen bouwt, niet kaarten die je er nog even bij stopt.
Daarnaast is Ocelot Pride een van de sterkere aggro-tools uit de set. Goedkoop, snel schaalbaar, en meteen een staple in witte agressiedecks. En dan is er Tamiyo, Inquisitive Student // Tamiyo, Seasoned Scholar, een split-planeswalker die blauw-groene midrange en controle-decks een nieuwe motor gaf. Kaarten als deze verklaren waarom MH3 binnen weken na release de bans in Modern al deed schuiven.
Waarom deze set anders werkt
Modern Horizons-sets zijn geen verhaal-uitbreiding met een setje boosters erbij, het is Wizards die doelbewust powercreep in een specifiek formaat injecteert. Geen Standard-rotatie die de kaarten later irrelevant maakt, dus de impact blijft. Dat merk je aan de prijzen van losse kaarten die na release meteen stevig staan, en aan de metagame-verschuivingen die je normaal alleen bij een grote banlijst-update ziet.
Voor spelers zit de waarde in bruikbaarheid, niet in nostalgie. Wie Modern speelt, kan niet om deze set heen: de titanen, Ocelot Pride en Tamiyo zitten inmiddels in meerdere archetypes verweven. Ook Commander-spelers grijpen de grote Eldrazi met beide handen aan, die kaarten zijn precies het soort finisher waar een 100-kaarten deck op wacht.
Waar verzamelaars op moeten letten
Bij Modern Horizons-sets draait het altijd om de foils en de retro-frame kaarten. MH3 introduceerde weer een eigen visuele stijl naast de standaard versies, en juist die alternatieve prints trekken de aandacht van verzamelaars. Let op drukkwaliteit en of je een borderless of retro-versie in handen hebt: dat verschil bepaalt vaak het grootste deel van de marge. Speelbaarheid en zeldzaamheid vallen bij deze set grotendeels samen, de kaarten die competitief het felst begeerd zijn, zijn precies de kaarten die verzamelaars ook najagen. Dat dubbele vraagprofiel houdt de markt voor de topkaarten stevig.
Kopen of niet
Modern Horizons 3 is inmiddels ruim twee jaar oud gerekend vanaf release, en de kaarten die de meta echt veranderden zitten er nog steeds stevig in. Dat is geen set die je koopt op speculatie, de waarde staat er al en wordt gedragen door daadwerkelijk gebruik in Modern en Commander.
