Op 7 oktober 2022 gooide Wizards of the Coast er weer een crossover tegenaan: Warhammer 40,000 Commander. Vier precons, geen boosters, geen setboosters, gewoon vier kant-en-klare decks voor de Commander-tafel. In onze catalogus staan 617 kaarten, evenveel als in de basisset, dus geen rariteitenjacht naar verborgen varianten. Wat je ziet is wat je krijgt.
Wat deze set anders maakt
Games Workshop en WotC hadden dit soort samenwerkingen al vaker gedaan met Secret Lair, maar dit was de eerste keer dat het 40K-universum een volwaardige productlijn kreeg binnen Magic zelf. Vier facties, vier decks: The Ruinous Powers (Chaos), Necron Dynasties, Forces of the Imperium en Space Marine Legions. Elk deck ademt zijn eigen thema. Chaos gaat voor sacrifice en demonen, Necrons draaien om recursie en artifacts, de Imperium-kant leunt op lifegain en aggressie, en de Space Marines stampen tokens en counters de tafel op. Geen los thema erbovenop geplakt, het zit in de kaartkeuzes zelf.
De kaarten die het gesprek bepalen
Marneus Calgar trekt als legendarische Space Marine de aandacht, letterlijk het gezicht van de Ultramarines op een Magic-kaart. Ghyrson Starn en Kelermorph zijn de graancommanders geworden buiten hun eigen decks om, ze doken op in cube-lijsten en losse Commander-builds omdat hun effecten ook zonder 40K-flavor gewoon sterk spelen. Celestine, the Living Saint blijft terugkomen dankzij haar recursie, een kaart die telkens weer opduikt zodra ze doodgaat, precies het soort effect dat een Commander-tafel irritant maakt voor tegenstanders. Bloodthirster en Exalted Flamer of Tzeentch trekken de Chaos-fans, twee demonen die zowel qua kunst als qua impact op het board thuishoren in een grimdark-universum.
Wat spelers eraan hebben
Wie een pasklaar deck zoekt hoeft niet te bouwen, alleen te spelen. De vier decks zijn los van elkaar sterk genoeg voor een casual tafel, en de synergieën zijn duidelijk genoeg om als startpunt te dienen voor wie zelf verder wil brewen. Voor Warhammer-fans die nooit Magic speelden was dit destijds ook een instapmoment, herkenbare namen en art trekken mensen over de streep die anders nooit een pack hadden opengemaakt.
Waar verzamelaars op moeten letten
Print run is nooit officieel bevestigd, maar de vraag vanuit de Warhammer-hoek zorgde voor extra druk op de markt bovenop de reguliere Magic-community. Let op de art: veel kaarten gebruiken 40K-eigen illustraties in plaats van herbeschilderde Magic-art, en dat maakt bepaalde versies aantrekkelijker dan de standaarduitgave van dezelfde functie. Foil-varianten van de precons zijn zeldzamer dan bij een normale Commander-set omdat er geen losse boosterproductie was om het aanbod op te hogen.
Wat het nu waard is om te kopen
Sealed decks van Warhammer 40,000 Commander zijn schaars geworden simpelweg omdat er geen herdruk kwam en de combinatie van twee fandoms de vraag structureel hoog houdt.
