Urza tegen Mishra, broedertwist op planetaire schaal, machines die de wereld verscheuren. Wizards had dit verhaal al decennia niet meer zo direct aangeraakt en dat merk je aan elke hoek van deze set. 399 kaarten in de basisset, evenveel in de volledige catalogus, dus geen bonusbrei of side-sets die de boel verwateren. Wat je ziet is wat je krijgt.
Wat kenmerkt deze set
Artefacten. Overal artefacten. The Brothers' War draait om Urza's en Mishra's machinebouw en dat vertaalt zich naar een van de dichtste artefact-thema's sinds Mirrodin. Powerstones, constructs, retro-frame kaarten die knipogen naar Antiquities uit 1994. Wizards heeft hier bewust een nostalgietrip van gemaakt zonder dat het als reboot-cashgrab aanvoelt, want de kaarten zelf zijn scherp ontworpen en spelen fris in Standard en Commander.
Transformerende dubbelzijdige kaarten met "meld"-achtige mechanieken duiken op, net als een sterk uitgewerkt Powerstone-subthema dat artefactdecks een extra tandje geeft. Retro-artwork varianten van klassieke kaarten zitten in de boosters verwerkt, wat de set voor collectors meteen interessanter maakt dan een gemiddelde set.
Kaarten die opvallen
Portal to Phyrexia is de chase-mythic van dit verhaal. Een colossale artefact-finisher die je board wegvaagt en je hand leegspeelt voor waanzinnige waarde, precies het soort bommetje dat Commander-tafels stil laat vallen. In Constructed is hij te duur om vaak te draaien, maar als topend spel in een ramp- of reanimator-shell doet hij letterlijk wat zijn naam belooft: een poort naar de overwinning.
Myrel, Shield of Argive is de andere uitschieter, een legendarische commander die aggressieve witte decks een duidelijk plan geeft. Ze beloont wijd spelen en aanvallen, precies wat casual- en cEDH-spelers zoeken in een simpel maar effectief anker voor hun deck. Awaken the Woods sluit het rijtje af als degelijke ramp-tover die groene decks een boost geeft richting hun grote dreigingen, zonder flashy te zijn maar altijd bruikbaar.
Voor spelers
Wie artefacten leuk vindt, zit hier goud. Standard kreeg met deze set een injectie aan artefactsynergie die weken- en maandenlang de metagame stuurde, en in Commander is The Brothers' War een van die sets waar bijna elke kleurcombinatie wel iets bruikbaars uit haalt. De retro-frames zijn puur cosmetisch maar geven elke rare of mythic een tweede leven op de secundaire markt, want spelers die op zoek zijn naar een specifieke look betalen daar gewoon voor.
Voor verzamelaars
Let op de Retro Artifact-serie en de Schematic-varianten, die zijn het echte verzamelobject in deze set. Los daarvan zijn het vooral de twee genoemde bommen, Portal to Phyrexia en Myrel, die de prijslijst dragen. Foilversies van beide blijven gegeerd omdat ze zowel speelbaar als esthetisch sterk ogen op tafel.
Wat is de set nu waard om te kopen
Bijna vier jaar na release is The Brothers' War uitgemolken qua Standard-relevantie, maar dat is precies het moment waarop een set interessant wordt voor de lange termijn. Los boosters kopen voor de gok op een dikke pull is meestal geen winnende strategie meer, de markt heeft zich al uitgekristalliseerd. Slimmer is gericht los kaarten pikken: Portal to Phyrexia en Myrel voor je Commander-bak, retro-foils als je van de look houdt. Prijzen van chase-kaarten uit sets met een sterk eigen verhaal en nostalgiefactor zakken zelden hard weg, dus wachten op een dip is geen slecht plan als je niet acuut wil bouwen.
