Tales of Middle-earth Commander verscheen op 23 juni 2023, gelijk met de reguliere Tales of Middle-earth set. Wizards koos hier niet voor een los sideshow-product maar voor een volwaardige Commander-uitbreiding met precommanders, nieuwe kaarten en een stevige lading reprints. In onze catalogus staat de set op 585 kaarten, de basisset zelf telt er 591. Dat verschil zit 'm in variant-afdrukken die we niet los tellen, niets om je zorgen over te maken.
Wat deze set kenmerkt: het is de eerste keer dat Middle-earth grootschalig de Commander-motor in gaat. Denk aan Ringwraiths, Hobbits en Fellowship-thema's die als sleutelwoorden en synergieën zijn vertaald naar EDH. De precommander decks brengen kant-en-klare 100-kaartendecks met exclusieve legendes, en dat is precies waar de hype vandaan komt. Spelers die nooit een Lord of the Rings-kaart in handen hadden, konden meteen los.
Het echte geld zit 'm in de reprints, niet in de nieuwe kaarten. Ancient Tomb staat erin, een van de meest gespeelde landen in fast mana-strategieën, en die kaart alleen al trekt boosters uit de schappen. The Great Henge is een ander zwaargewicht: goedkope waardemotor voor creature-decks, altijd gegeerd. Shadowspear geeft je exile-removal en een anthem-effect voor een prikkie, staple in bijna elk kleurenschema. Cavern of Souls is de land-reprint waar constructed-spelers al jaren om schreeuwen, tribal decks worden er ineens een stuk stabieler van. En dan Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, nog altijd het land dat elk ander land zwart maakt en daarmee mana-basissen repareert die anders niet zouden werken.
Voor spelers zit de winst in gameplay die meteen goed voelt. De precommanders zijn niet de gebruikelijke ondermaatse instapproducten, ze zitten vol bruikbare staples naast het Tolkien-sausje. Je kunt een deck zo uit de doos halen en meedraaien aan een pauper-Commander-avond zonder dat het kansloos aanvoelt.
Verzamelaars letten op drie dingen. Eén: de serialized kaarten, met unieke nummering, die voor losse chase-cards zorgen die ver boven setwaarde uitstijgen. Twee: de Legendary-borderless kunst, veel Middle-earth-personages kregen alternatieve full-art behandelingen die duidelijk mooier ogen dan de standaardversie en daardoor een premie krijgen. Drie: de precommander-exclusieve legendes, die vaak alleen in dit product zitten en dus schaars blijven zolang er geen herdruk komt.
Wat is de set nu waard om te kopen. De losse chase-reprints zoals Ancient Tomb, The Great Henge en Cavern of Souls blijven de motor achter de vraag, die kaarten spelen in tientallen formats en die vraag verdwijnt niet. Boosterboxen zelf zijn typisch Commander-product: relatief traag in prijs, want het zijn geen boosters voor draft maar singles-vehikels. Als je puur voor de speelbare staples gaat, is los kopen van de topkaarten vaak slimmer dan een sealed box openen. Voor de precommanders geldt: koop ze voor het deck zelf, niet als speculatie, tenzij je een ongeopende sealed unit apart weglegt voor de lange termijn. Sealed van deze set houdt zijn waarde het beste vast zolang Lord of the Rings een populaire IP blijft binnen Magic, en dat signaal staat vooralsnog op groen.
