Wat kenmerkt de set
Thunder Junction is Magic's cowboyfilm. Desperado's, treinovervallen, plots en een sheriff die de boel bij elkaar probeert te houden. Mechanisch draait het om Plot, waarmee je kaarten vooraf betaalt en later gratis casts, en Outlaws, een tribal-achtig thema dat beloont als je creatures met de types Assassin, Mercenary, Pirate, Rogue of Warlock speelt. Vehicles komen ook weer voorbij, want een western zonder rijdende wagens is geen western. Het resultaat is een set die agressief aanvoelt, snel wil spelen en volop synergie biedt voor wie een deck rond een criminele bende wil bouwen.
Kaarten die opvallen
Bristly Bill, Spine Sower is de mono-groene outlaw die van vechten tegen creatures direct landfall-waarde haalt. Simpel, sterk, en precies het soort kaart dat commander-spelers massaal oppikken omdat hij in bijna elk groen deck past. Spine Sower verschijnt in de catalogus zelfs dubbel vermeld, wat aangeeft hoe vaak hij over de toonbank gaat.
Terror of the Peaks, ooit uit Kaldheim, duikt hier weer op en blijft een moordmachine: elke creature die het slagveld op komt, schiet er meteen eentje af. Twee keer genoteerd in onze lijst, wat past bij een kaart die zowel in cube als in commander een vaste waarde is.
Goldvein Hydra is de bomdreiging voor grindy potjes. Groeit met treasure tokens, levert zelf mana op en wordt op een gegeven moment gewoon te groot om te blokken. Precies het soort finisher waar limited-spelers blij van worden en constructed-spelers een oogje op houden.
Voor spelers
Limited draait hard op Plot en op het combineren van outlaw-types, dus wie een archetype vindt en volhoudt, wint tempo. Commander-spelers krijgen met deze set een hele reeks legendaries die bendes aansturen, en de synergie tussen kleuren is bewust breed gehouden zodat je niet vastzit aan één stijl. Constructed-spelers kijken vooral naar de efficiënte outlaws en de treasure-synergie, die in meerdere formats al voet aan de grond heeft gekregen.
Waar verzamelaars op letten
Let op de borderless en showcase-versies van de sleutelkaarten, die traditioneel het hardst in prijs bewegen. Terror of the Peaks trekt vooral aandacht omdat het een herdruk is met nieuwe art, wat de kaart voor zowel spelers als verzamelaars aantrekkelijk maakt. Bij Bristly Bill en Goldvein Hydra is het de speelbaarheid die de vraag drijft, niet alleen de plaatjes. Check bij aankoop altijd of je de reguliere versie of een alternate art in handen hebt, want dat verschil tikt flink door in wat een kaart oplevert.
Wat is de set nu waard om te kopen
Ruim een jaar na release is de eerste hype-golf voorbij en zijn de prijzen gezakt naar een realistischer niveau. Dat is precies het moment waarop je moet toeslaan als je op zoek bent naar speelkaarten voor een deck: sleutelstukken zoals Bristly Bill en Terror of the Peaks liggen doorgaans lager dan bij release, terwijl de speelbaarheid onveranderd hoog blijft. Voor verzamelaars die op waardestijging mikken, is het interessanter om te wachten tot herdrukken uitblijven en de kaarten structureel schaarser worden. Boosterboxen kopen voor de investering heeft nu weinig zin, de set is breed gedrukt en de markt is verzadigd. Losse kaarten pakken voor je deck: prima moment. Speculeren op forse winst: niet met deze set.
