Het is een epiloog, een korte maar keiharde afsluiter van het Phyrexian-verhaal dat een hele Standard-cyclus overhoop gooide. 230 kaarten in de basisset, evenveel in onze catalogus, en toch voelt hij groter dan zijn omvang. Wizards koos bewust voor compact: geen booster fun, geen halve set aan filler, gewoon impact per kaart.
Dat is meteen wat deze set kenmerkt. Waar March of the Machine zelf een grote invasie-set was met multiverse-schaal, draait The Aftermath om de nasleep: personages die overleven, personages die breken, en een paar die keihard van kant veranderen. Dat zie je terug in de kaarten zelf. Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin is precies dat: een demon die niet langer de baas is en daar niet vrolijk van wordt. Nahiri, Forged in Fury komt terug met wraak in de blik na jaren op de achtergrond. Calix, Guided by Fate speelt met enchantments op een manier die Pantheon-fans meteen herkennen. En Nissa, Resurgent Animist bewijst waarom planeswalkers in deze set zwaar leunen op waarde per kaart in plaats van pure bordimpact.
Voor spelers zit de winst in dichtheid. Elke planeswalker hierboven is Standard-playable gebleken, en dat is geen toeval. Aftermath is ontworpen als een set die je Standard-deck een nieuwe richting geeft zonder dat je twintig boosters hoeft open te trekken om er iets bruikbaars uit te vissen. Commander-spelers plukken er ook driftig uit: de planeswalkers zijn sterke commanders of insteken in bestaande shells, en de set introduceerde bovendien flashback-achtige mechanieken die goed passen in graveyard-strategieën.
Voor verzamelaars ligt de focus op de vijf planeswalkers en hun alternate arts. Showcase- en borderless-versies van Nahiri en Nissa trekken de meeste aandacht, en dat is logisch: het zijn de personages met de langste geschiedenis in het spel. Let op de foil-etched versies, die zijn schaarser dan de gewone foils en worden vaker gezocht door binders-bouwers dan door spelers. Set boosters waren de norm hier, geen draft boosters, wat de pull rates net iets anders maakt dan bij een normale set. Dat heeft de voorraad op de lange termijn beperkter gehouden dan bij grotere releases.
Wat is de set nu waard om in te stappen. Aftermath is klein, gerichte, met een verhaalimpact die MTG-fans niet snel vergeten, en dat soort sets houdt doorgaans beter waarde vast dan grote setnummers. De sleutelkaarten zijn de planeswalkers, punt uit: als je koopt, koop voor die vijf en negeer de rest van de set als bulk. Los kopen is voordeliger dan boosters trekken, want de pull rate op de chase-kaarten is laag en de rest van de set is nauwelijks gevraagd. Wacht niet op een dip die niet komt: verhaalrelevante planeswalkers uit een afsluitende set blijven gewild zolang het personage relevant blijft in de lore, en Nissa en Nahiri verdwijnen voorlopig niet uit beeld.
