Neon-steden, kami die nu AI-achtige machines zijn, en een Japan dat duizend jaar vooruit is gesprongen. Visueel is dit een van de meest onderscheidende sets die Wizards ooit maakte, en dat zie je terug in hoe collectors erover praten.
De catalogus telt 517 kaarten, de basisset zelf 531. Dat gat komt door bonusvarianten: showcase-kaarten, sketch cards en de beruchte neon ink foils, waarbij de artwork letterlijk oplicht met neon-lijnen. Die neon ink-versies zijn meteen het pronkstuk van de set. Ze zijn zeldzaam, ze zien er nergens anders zo uit, en ze trekken zowel spelers als pure vitrine-verzamelaars aan.
Qua thema draait de set om twee mechanics die goed op elkaar inspelen: channel en reconfigure. Channel geeft je flexibiliteit, je speelt een kaart als goedkope spreuk of als creature, nooit een dode kaart in de hand. Reconfigure introduceert Equipment-creatures, dingen die zowel los een dreiging zijn als aan een andere creature vastklikken als upgrade. Dat laatste bleek een schot in de roos voor Constructed, vooral in combinatie met goedkope aggressieve decks.
Op de kaartenlijst springen een paar namen er meteen uit. Boseiju, Who Endures is de duidelijke Constructed-ster geworden, een land dat ook een instant-achtige removal-spreuk kan zijn. Die kaart is over meerdere formats heen relevant gebleken, van Modern tot Legacy tot Commander, en dat merk je aan de vraag. Jin-Gitaxias, Progress Tyrant is de dikke bommenwerper voor wie van vijf-mana-bordwissels houdt, en Hidetsugu, Devouring Chaos is het type kaart dat in Commander meteen een tafel vol paranoia veroorzaakt zodra hij op tafel komt, met zijn levenspunten-halveringstruc.
Voor spelers zit er dus genoeg in: een set die zowel Limited-goed is opgebouwd rond channel als bruikbare staples oplevert voor Constructed en Commander. Voor verzamelaars ligt de focus op drie dingen. Eén: de neon ink treatments, hoe extremer de foil, hoe hoger de premie. Twee: showcase-kaarten met de cyberpunk-artstyle, die verkopen los van de speelbaarheid van de kaart zelf gewoon op looks. Drie: staat. Foilkaarten uit deze set zijn gevoelig voor curl en glare door de speciale coating, dus check altijd goed onder licht voor je koopt.
Wat is de set nu waard om in te stappen. Boseiju blijft de motor achter deze set en zolang die relevant is in meerdere formats, blijft de vraag stabiel tot licht stijgend. Los kopen van singles is voor de meeste spelers verstandiger dan boosters scheuren, de pull rate op de echt dure neon ink-kaarten is bewust laag gehouden. Voor de lange termijn zijn het vooral de showcase- en neon ink-versies van Boseiju en Jin-Gitaxias die potentie hebben, simpelweg omdat visuele impact bij Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty het verkoopargument is en dat soort vraag verdwijnt niet zomaar. Sealed product inslaan is alleen interessant als je lang wilt vasthouden, de set is inmiddels ruim vier jaar oud en supply droogt langzaam op. Voor wie nu instapt: richt je op speelbare staples met bewezen trackrecord en laat de puur decoratieve rares over aan wie toch al verzamelt om het plaatje.
