Foundations: de set die Magic weer bij het begin brengt
Foundations verscheen op 15 november 2024 en is geen gewone set. Wizards bouwde hem als permanente basis voor Standard en Limited, met 771 kaarten in de basisset en evenveel in onze catalogus. Geen wegwerpblok dus, maar een fundament dat jarenlang blijft liggen. Dat maakt hem meteen anders dan de doorsnee uitbreiding die na een paar maanden alweer naar de achtergrond verdwijnt.
Wat deze set kenmerkt
Foundations mikt op twee doelgroepen tegelijk: nieuwe spelers die een instappunt nodig hebben, en doorgewinterde deckbouwers die krachtige staples zoeken. Dat zie je terug in de kaartenpool. Llanowar Elves staat erin, de mana-dork die al decennia in groene decks zit en nu weer vers beschikbaar is zonder dat je oude edities hoeft af te struinen. Doubling Season is de andere kant van het spectrum: een Commander-staple die counters en tokens verdubbelt, en die nu voor het eerst in jaren weer gedrukt wordt in plaats van alleen tegen woekerprijzen op de secundaire markt te circuleren.
Kaarten en thema's die opvallen
De set brengt ook nieuwe klappers. Twinflame Tyrant en Bloodthirsty Conqueror zijn de agressieve rode bommen die Limited-tafels moeten opblazen en meteen ook Standard-potentie hebben. Muldrotha, the Gravetide is de terugkerende legend voor graveyard-decks, een archetype dat in Commander al jaren dankbaar wordt gespeeld en nu breder beschikbaar komt. Het thema van de set is dus niet één mechaniek, maar een mix van bewezen krachtpatsers en nieuwe finishers die in meerdere formats moeten landen: Standard, Commander en Limited tegelijk.
Wat spelers eraan hebben
Voor Limited betekent een basisset meestal een toegankelijker draft: duidelijke archetypes, minder verwarrende synergieën, en een hoger aandeel herkenbare effecten. Voor Standard-spelers is Foundations relevant omdat de set blijvend legaal is, in tegenstelling tot reguliere sets die na verloop van tijd rotaten. Dat betekent dat kaarten als Llanowar Elves niet over een paar maanden weer onbruikbaar worden in het format. Voor Commander-spelers is de herdruk van Doubling Season het警alarm: een kaart die eindelijk weer op de plank ligt in plaats van alleen tegen forse bedragen los verkrijgbaar.
Waar verzamelaars op letten
Verzamelaars kijken bij Foundations vooral naar drie dingen: welke kaarten een herdruk kregen die eerder schaars was, welke nieuwe legends een eigen playmat-waardige illustratie hebben, en welke printings (borderless, extended art, foil-varianten) het meest gewild worden. Doubling Season is het schoolvoorbeeld: een herdruk drukt normaliter de prijs van oude printings, maar bij een kaart met zo'n groot Commander-fanbase blijft vraag naar specifieke alternate art versies vaak overeind. Muldrotha volgt hetzelfde patroon: de reguliere versie wordt toegankelijk, de mooiere varianten blijven het jachtterrein van verzamelaars.
Wat de set nu waard is om te kopen
Ruim anderhalf jaar na release is Foundations ingeburgerd. De basisdruk van staples als Llanowar Elves is goedkoop en dat blijft ook zo, want de kaart wordt breed herdrukt en heeft geen kunstmatige schaarste. Doubling Season en Muldrotha zijn de kaarten om in de gaten te houden: reguliere versies zijn betaalbaar, maar bijzondere edities trekken aan zodra de hype rond een nieuw Commander-archetype oplaait. Voor wie nu instapt geldt: koop de speelversies voor decks zonder zorgen, en reserveer budget voor de opvallende alternate arts als je op waardevastheid mikt. Sealed boosters van een basisset als deze zijn zelden een sterke investering, daarvoor drukt Wizards er simpelweg te veel van. De losse bommen zijn het echte doelwit.
