Duskmourn: House of Horror kwam op 27 september 2024 uit en gooide meteen de deur naar horror wagenwijd open. Geen subtiele knipoog naar het genre, maar een complete set gebouwd rond een spookhuis dat een hele planeet opslokt. De catalogus telt 419 kaarten, de basisset zelf ook 419. Geen halve maatregelen dus, dit is een volwaardige, dichtgetimmerde set met genoeg diepte voor constructed en genoeg gekte voor Limited.
Wat deze set kenmerkt
Duskmourn draait om een plane die letterlijk een huis is geworden, met kamers vol nachtmerries en een baas die op de achtergrond aan de touwtjes trekt. Dat concept zie je terug in de kaartnamen, de flavor text en de manier waarop de set met verwachtingen speelt: dingen die veilig lijken, bijten terug. Mechanisch leunt de set op thema's rond overleven, opoffering en het omdraaien van je eigen resources tegen je vijand. Precies wat je wil van een horrorset: spanning die ook op de tafel voelbaar is.
Kaarten en thema's die opvallen
Valgavoth is de kaart waar iedereen het over heeft. Als mythische bedreiging aan de top van de set trekt hij zowel Commander-spelers als constructed-bouwers aan, en dat soort aandacht duwt de prijs meestal in een hogere baan dan de gemiddelde mythic uit de set.
Terror Eater en Enduring Vitality laten het opoffering-en-recursie-thema van de set zien: kaarten die pas goed werken als je bereid bent iets in te leveren. Enduring Curiosity vult dat rijtje aan met kaartvoordeel dat blijft terugkomen, precies het soort motor waar grindy decks op draaien.
De Overlords vormen het andere paradepaardje. Overlord of the Balemurk en Overlord of the Hauntwoods zijn typisch dat soort veelzijdige bommen die zowel als land als als dreiging spelen, en dat maakt ze aantrekkelijk voor zowel Limited-drafters als Commander-bouwers die flexibiliteit zoeken.
Wat spelers eraan hebben
Voor Limited levert het horror-thema genoeg interactie en swingy momenten op om drafts spannend te houden. Voor constructed-spelers is het de vraag of de nieuwe overleef- en opoffermechanieken zich blijvend nestelen in bestaande archetypes, en de eerste signalen wijzen erop dat een paar van deze kaarten dat wel degelijk doen. Commander-spelers krijgen met de Overlords en Valgavoth precies het soort veelzijdige, flexibele kaarten waar ze op zitten te wachten: bruikbaar in meerdere kleurcombinaties en sterk genoeg om een deck omheen te bouwen.
Waar verzamelaars op letten
Bij een set van dit formaat draait het voor verzamelaars vooral om zeldzaamheid van de topkaarten en de vraag of showcase- of alternate-art versies het straatbeeld gaan domineren. Valgavoth en de Overlords zijn de kaarten om in de gaten te houden: mythics met zowel Commander- als constructed-appeal houden hun waarde doorgaans beter vast dan set-mythics die alleen in één format scoren. Let ook op welke varianten er verschijnen, want bij horror-thema's trekt Wizards vaak extra registers open qua alternate art, en dat stuurt direct waar de vraag naartoe gaat.
Wat is de set nu waard om te kopen
Bijna een jaar na release is de eerste hype-golf voorbij en zijn de prijzen gezakt naar een realistischer niveau. Dat is precies het moment om selectief in te stappen: mik op de kaarten met bewezen speelbaarheid zoals Valgavoth en de sterkste Overlords, niet op de hele set. Boosterboxen zijn inmiddels goedkoper dan bij release, wat de set aantrekkelijker maakt om voor Limited of Commander-bouwmateriaal te kopen dan puur als investering. Voor losse kaarten geldt: koop wat je speelt, wees terughoudend met speculeren op kaarten zonder duidelijke rol in een populair archetype.
