Double Masters 2022 (2X2) verscheen op 8 juli 2022 en is de opvolger van Double Masters uit 2020. Het idee blijft hetzelfde: twee kaarten per pack in plaats van één, en een prijskaartje dat daarnaar staat. Wie een booster opent betaalt fors meer dan bij een normale set, maar krijgt er dubbele hit-kans voor terug. In onze catalogus staat de set op 579 kaarten, gelijk aan de basisset, dus geen rare bonusuitbreiding erbij.
Wat deze set kenmerkt
2X2 is gebouwd voor reprints van kaarten die anders alleen tegen woekerprijzen op de secundaire markt te vinden zijn. Geen nieuwe mechanics, geen nieuw verhaal. Puur waarde stapelen. Wizards mikt hier op Commander-spelers en verzamelaars die krachtige staples eindelijk normaal in handen willen krijgen, zonder drie tientjes per losse kaart neer te tellen.
Kaarten die opvallen
Imperial Seal staat er twee keer in en dat is geen toeval. Deze tutor is in de Commander-scene een van de duurste kleine kaartjes die er zijn, en elke herdruk drukt de prijs een tikje omlaag, tot de volgende schaarste weer toeslaat. Mana Vault blijft een staple voor snelle starts, precies het soort ramp dat competitieve Commander-decks nodig hebben. En dan de twee Eldrazi-titans: Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre en Kozilek, Butcher of Truth. Grote, dreigende finishers die in elk kleurloos of colorless-matters deck zo binnenlopen. Deze drie namen samen laten zien waar de set op mikt: kaarten die spelers toch al wilden hebben, maar die niemand nog voor de oorspronkelijke prijs kon vinden.
Wat spelers eraan hebben
Voor Commander is dit een van de sterkste reprint-sets ooit gemaakt. Wie een deck bouwt en tutors, ramp of grote dreigingen zoekt, vindt in 2X2 precies dat zonder de EDH-tax die op losse singles zit. De hoge boosterprijs schrikt casual spelers af, maar wie gericht singles koopt in plaats van boosters opent, plukt daar wel de vruchten van.
Waar verzamelaars op letten
Foil-versies en de speciale box toppers trekken de aandacht, net als de retro-frame kaarten die veel Double Masters-sets kenmerken. Verzamelaars kijken vooral naar conditie en naar welke printing precies in handen is, want reprint-sets zorgen vaak voor meerdere versies van dezelfde kaart die in prijs uit elkaar lopen. Bij een chase card als Imperial Seal maakt het nogal wat uit of je de 2X2-versie hebt of een oudere, zeldzamere printing.
Wat de set nu waard is om te kopen
Sealed boosters van 2X2 zijn nooit goedkoop geweest en dat verandert niet. Sealed product kopen is vooral iets voor wie gokt op verdere prijsstijging op langere termijn, niet voor wie snel rendement wil zien. Voor de losse kaarten geldt: koop ze als je ze nodig hebt in een deck, niet als speculatie op korte termijn winst.
